Prices for the law program, which include housing, start at $2,350.

If nothing else, the program may just give you the excuse you’ve been looking for to finally get to Buenos Aires.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Learn more at about our legal spanish program by visiting Gateway Argentina's website.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://gatewayargentina.blogspot.com/2008/09/want-to-learn-legal-spanish-aba-journal.html' title='Want to learn legal Spanish? In each post our volunteers share their experience with you**

Buenos Aires is a city that never sleeps. I knew this before coming to Buenos Aires. I quickly learned that if you want to make the most out of Buenos Aires, its best if you embrace the late night dinners and early morning Spanish classes, or in my case, train rides.

I have decided to volunteer during my time in Buenos Aires, as well as take Spanish classes. I believed that if put myself out there, into an unfamiliar environment, the struggle to communicate would help my Spanish. It would be "real-life" practice. Working to get your point across to a group of youngsters is not like working to order off a menu.

My volunteer placement was arranged for me before I arrived. I was pleased to be able to "get started" right away with a placement that was hand-picked by HelpArgentina for me based on my interests. It was a perfect match. I am volunteering at Alimentar Enseñando. Alimentar is a community center that promotes education, nutrition and health through rural development projects and a daily soup kitchen that educates mothers on healthy nutritional habits for themselves and their children.

On the days that I go to the center, I wake early and head to Barrio Once to take the train to Moreno. The train ride takes about an hour, then I hop on a bus in Moreno that heads toward General Rodriguez. I hop off the bus, cross the street for the short walk to the center, (I am in the country) as I round the corner I begin to hear the voices. Its only 10:15 in the morning, but its going to be a hot day. I hear the voices of close to 40 children playing, and waiting with anticipation. I open the main gate and the stampede begins.

¡Seño! ¡Seño! One things for sure, I hold the key to the swimming pool, and "los clases de natacíon" are a highlight of the day.

I was placed as a volunteer at Alimentar because I wanted to be able to work both with children and also in public health and community development. Upon arriving at Alimentar on my first day I noticed that the center, which is a converted Estancia had a swimming pool. I decided that I would teach swimming lessons to the children that come to the center everyday.

I teach in groups of five or so, depending on age. Usually my groups consist of the "chiquititos", who are the children '5 and under'. I continue with the 6 & 7's, 8 & 9's, 10 &11's, followed by the 12's, 13 & 14's and then finally the over 14, or as I call them, "los grandes". On a typical day I teach 7 different groups over the span of 2 1/2 hours.

On the train ride back to Once, I carefully pick the perfect seat, a seat that faces backwards, has a window that opens to optimize the breeze and has a place for me to put my feet up. And, when the "Helados Helados" man comes by never think twice about buying an ice cream.

** To learn more about Gateway Argentina's volunteer programs you can read about them on our website. **

Wine and Spanish Course in Buenos Aires, Argentina

Gateway Argentina has partnered with Argentina’s premier wine school in Buenos Aires. Well first there is always all the end of the old year reports, top 10 this, top 50 that, as a kid my fascination with "top" lists began and ended with the Billboard year end charts; what was the best song of 1994?!? I would think about it for weeks. As I listened to the year-end broadcast, and when it wasn't Mariah Cary singing about a Hero, or All-4-One swearing about something, I knew my prediction would be right, Ace of Base's The Sign would take the 'Top Song' spot of 1994.

But, what does this have to do with Buenos Aires? Well, luckily I grew up, stop listening to Ace of Base, but I never lost my fascination with all the year end lists, charts and reports. While I couldn't tell you what the top song of 2007 was, I did see some "top lists" at the beginning of 2008 which made me very excited!

The International Herald Tribune recently published "the 53 places to go in 2008" as a travel enthusiast and small business owner in Argentina, I was thrilled to see Buenos Aires make the list at the 27th spot. The International Herald Tribune's raving about Buenos Aires, Argentina would have been enough for me, it would have satisfied my year-long longing for the "New Year" reports, it would have made me think I was a cleaver self-starter, clearly doing something right by starting a business in Buenos Aires, being in the right place at the right time, with the right ideas.

A few days later there was another surprise for me as I filtered through recent articles about Argentina. This surprise confirmed it, I was in the right place at the right time with the right ideas. The New York Times had published their 2008 list. It listed only 8 different destinations, broken down by categories, such as family, luxury, emerging, but the category I was so excited about was budget. Argentina was The New York Times chosen budget travel destination!

I had started the right business, while Buenos Aires provides a budget destination to live while learning Spanish, Gateway Argentina takes the thrill of living in Buenos Aires and brings it one step further, creating customized packages for its clients.

Our focus is to provide our clients the best of Buenos Aires, we have contracts with the cities best Spanish language schools, accommodation providers, travel services, volunteer agencies, and services geared towards foreigners. We use your requests and our trusted network of providers to create each individual the perfect program.

So make your New Years resolution to learn Spanish!

Happy New Years! The sun would be warm and the day would be perfect for the different optional planned activities.

Upon arriving in Colonia we rented bikes. A bike for a day cost roughly $3.00 US. These certainly were NOT road bikes... but they had two wheels. My bike reminded me of a terrible cross breeding of the Huffy I got for my 13th Birthday and the yellow beach cruiser that once got me around Pacific Beach.

The group stocked up on snacks and bottles of water at a kiosco near Colonia's crumbling but yet still glorious bullfighting ring. It has been years since the ring has seen a bull; now occupied by stray dogs and overgrown weeds. Photos were snapped as wandering horses crossed in front of the ring, perhaps looking for greener pastures.

However, unlike the stray dogs and wandering livestock we had some serious distance to cover in order to make our destination on time. The estimation was 40K. After about 5K we were outside of Colonia. After another 5K, farms appeared. After another 5K the roads become dirt. By 20K in we were surrounded by fields, livestock and blue skies as far as the eyes could see. The last 20K were inside Estancia Anchorena, or destination.

Estancia Anchorena, is the sprawling estancia of Uruguay current President. While visiting the house, a herd of sheep and deer made their way across the grounds. Laughs were contagious as we joked about the likeliness of ever seeing a herd of sheep on the front lawn of the White House.

We returned to Colonia to take in the simplicity and ambiance of the uniqueness that makes it a desired destination for photographers, cafe-seekers and over achievers. People Magazine reported that Katie Holmes finished the NYC marathon on the same weekend in a respectable 5 hours 29 minutes.

Gateway Argentina's 2007 team hailed from four countries and three continents, representing Brasil, Mexico, Holland, and the USA.

Eva, from The Netherlands, completed her first marathon in an impressive 4.30, despite being approximately one foot shorter than Katie Holmes. She credits her success to her practice runs between Boca and River stadium and her Brazilian trainer Somulo. Soumlo ran an impressive race as well, and was the first member of Team Gateway Argentina to cross the finish line.

Victor, who works in tourism promotion for the Mexican embassy, decided to join the Team Gateway Argentina and run his first marathon less than 12 hours before the race began. Victor finished in just over 5 hours. He credits the Chivas for his perseverance.

Fueled by soya patties, pizza and raisins, the speedy Texan, Discovery, finished two entire hours faster than Katie Holmes, in 3.37.

Gateway Argentina's Laurel Lichty reports, "power snacks are very important when running for hours at a time, the un-pitted prunes were a 'sopresa' (surprise)." Laurel completed the race in 4.50. The Buenos Aires marathon was Laurel's fourth marathon, having last completed the London marathon in 2005.

She ran an impressive "Southern Hemisphere" race without training. She would like to thank the Beastie Boys and her Ipod shuffle for their undying support, without which she may not have rounded mile 20.

Team Gateway Argentina runners and fans enjoyed a lovely post marathon Sunday brunch on the terrace of The Drink Gallery on Arce and Chenaut in Las Cañitas. Monday was "Dia de la Raza" or Columbus Day.

This past weekend the city of Buenos Aires emptied out as bus stations and highways packed up. We followed the lead and along with Q Hacemos, a student excursion service for Spanish speaking foreigners living in Buenos Aires, we were off.

Our international group of Americans, Dutch, Ecuadorians, Mexicans and Argentines arrived in Villa General Belgrano early Saturday morning. Villa General Belgrano is a small German village located in mountainous province of Cordoba. We were just in time to participant in the week long festivities of Oktoberfest. This year was the 75th Anniversary.

The weekends activities included two tickets to enter into the festival, a typical Argentine asado (BBQ), plenty of Mate drinking (traditional drink of Argentina) and perhaps the most competitive volleyball tournament I've seen since Misty May and Kerri Walsh beat the Brazilians for Olympic gold in 2004.

It was a 'Columbus day' weekend to remember, in a small German village in the hills of Cordoba, where everyone spoke Spanish... or well Castellano.

To learn more about Gateway Argentina's programs, visit the website.

RIVER v BOCA, A Gateway Argentina Experience

Yesterday Gateway Argentina attended the River v Boca superclassico.
